Crystallization in Two-Component Coulomb Systems

Crystallization of holes in semiconductors verified by theory and computer simulations. If the holes are sufficiently heavy they spontaneously form a crystal embedded into an electron gas. The animation shows Path Integral Monte Carlo results for the configuration of electrons (yellow) and holes (red) when the hole to electron mass ratio cycles through the values 5-12-25-50-100 (Animation by G.
