Solar Wind Stream Interfaces at 1 AU

Solar wind stream interfaces are the sites of differential streaming between protons and heavy ions. Nevertheless, they also exhibit clear discontinuities in the heavy-ion content of the bulk plasma (protons). Obviously, the differential streaming (on the order of about the local Alfven speed) cannot be strictly radial. The aim of this work is to investigate the flow directions of heavy ions in the vicinities of solar wind stream interfaces using the PLASTIC instrument on the STEREO spacecraft.

This work requires good programming skills and a solid physics background.
