The city

Kiel, a university city of 22,000 students, is the capital of Schleswig-Holstein, the northernmost state in Germany. Kiel has a population of more than 230,000 and is located on the Baltic Sea at the head of the Kiel Bay.

By train

Kiel can be reached by train from any large German city via Hamburg main station where you may have to change to a local train with final destination Kiel. Germany has a fast train system, Intercity (IC) and Intercity Express (ICE), which connects Hamburg with Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf, Berlin, etc. There is a limited number of through trains that terminate in Kiel.

By airplane

We recommend choosing Hamburg as your destination in Germany. There are connecting flights to Hamburg from Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich.
When you arrive in Hamburg, there are airport shuttle services to Kiel, named Kielius (you can buy your ticket in the bus) and Kiel-Exx (which is faster but requires preregistration by phone) . The shuttle buses leave from platform C close to terminal 1. The Kielius shuttle takes about 90 min to downtown Kiel. The bus terminal in Kiel is close to the main railway station.

By car (from the south)

Take the motorway/freeway via Hamburg (Autobahn A7), change to no. A215 at the motorway bifurcation "Autobahndreieck Bordesholm".
