ACE (Advanced Composition Explorer)

ACE is a NASA mission that stared in 1997. Kiel is taking part in Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometer (SWICS) and Solar Wind Ion Mass Spectrometer (SWIMS).

SWICS is a time-of-flight mass spectrometer that measures the ionic-charge composition in the solar wind. This allows conclusions to be drawn about the acceleration mechanisms of the solar wind. The ionic-charge composition of the solar wind varies in the different types of solar winds, and can therefore serve as an indicator of the coronal origin of the solar wind.

SWIMS is an isochronic time-of-flight mass spectrometer that measures the mass composition, especially the isotopic composition, of the solar wind. For example, SWIMS was used to measure the isotope ratio sup>16O/18O for the first time in slightly fractionated, fast solar wind. This ratio is important for research in planetology.
