Drought resistance explained
Structural study at EMBL reveals how plants respond to water shortages

European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), Grenoble, France

Scientist at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Grenoble, France, and at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas (CSIS) in Valencia, Spain, discovered that the key to plants' responses to drought lies in the structure of a protein called PYR1 and how it interacts with the plant hormone abscisic acid (ABA). Their study could open up new basic approaches to increasing crops' resistance to water shortage.
[The Image alongside, which shows the structure of the protein PYR1, belongs to Mr. Márquez (EMBL)]. [more] [archive]

The finest Beam of the World
The Accelerator PETRA III reaches a horizontal Design Emittance of 1 nm rad

Shortly after its start-up, the PETRA III accelerator already sets a world record in “lowest emittance”.

The measure of the size of the light spot is a key parameter of the facility, making PETRA III the best storage ring light source worldwide. [more] [archive]

Access to Major International X-Ray and Neutron Scattering Facilities

The Commitee on International Scientific Affairs (CISA) of the American Physical Society (APS) has recently completed a study entitled "Access to Major International X-Ray and Neutron Scattering Facilities". Many facilities and User Groups kindly completed a questionnaire on access issues and policies in 2007 on which the study is largely based.
The Report was prepared by a subcommittee of the Committee on International Scientific Affairs of the American Physical Society. [more] [archive]
