Effects of Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) radiation to human brain



In a recent study published in scientific reports, Khaksarighiri et al. (2021) used a realistic model of the human head/brain to calculate the energy deposited by realistic Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) radiation for relevant shielding scenarios. They determine the relation between the radiation dose deposited in different parts of the brain and the properties of the SEP events to obtain simple and ready-to-use functions which can be used to quickly and reliably forecast the event dose in the brain. This novel tool is important for  rapid now-casting of the consequences of SEP events but also to optimize  shielding systems and other mitigation strategies to reduce the effects of radiation on astronauts in space.
