Nils P. Janitzek was awarded the Outstanding Student Paper Award

Nils P. Janitzek (AG Wimmer-Schweingruber) was awarded the Outstanding Student Paper Award (OSPA) at the fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU). The meeting typically hosts some 25 thousand scientists from around the world.

Together with Dr. Lars Berger, Nils P. Janitzek investigated the differential streaming between heavy ions and the bulk protons in the solar wind during different configurations of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). They found that the magnitude of this differential streaming can reach up to 70% of the local Alfvén speed and points along the IMF.

The figure shows the differential streaming of solar wind Fe10+ ions versus the bulk (proton) solar wind speed for perpendicular- (left panel) and parallel-pointing (right panel) IMF orientations.
