In the past decade experimental and theoretical progress has both challenged and reaffirmed some of the basic tenets on which equilibrium quantum statistical mechanics is built. In this colloquium I will review this developing field, which spans a remarkably broad range of topics from cold atomic gases to correlated electron systems and black holes. In particular, I will review work on interaction quenches in Fermi liquids and the phenomenon of prethermalization, which turns out to play an important role in the nonequilibrium dynamics of many other closed quantum systems, and present new results on the spatiotemporal buildup of correlations in Kondo systems.
